Story in this passage

Gibeon deceives Israel

Gibeon sends worn-out ambassadors who claim to come from a distant land. Israel samples their provisions but fails to ask the LORD, then makes a treaty with them. When the deception is discovered, Israel honors the oath and assigns the Gibeonites to serve the altar.

Setting
The Israelite camp at Gilgal as nearby kings form an alliance.
