Story in this passage

The spies report on Canaan

At God’s command, Moses sends one leader from each tribe to explore Canaan. The men return with fruit and describe a fertile land, but most of them also emphasize fortified cities and powerful inhabitants. Caleb urges Israel to go up and take the land, while the other spies spread fear and describe the people as grasshoppers before the giants.

Setting
Israel’s wilderness camp near the border of Canaan, the land promised to their ancestors.

Main events
Twelve men explore the land for forty days, bring back fruit, and give conflicting reports about whether Israel can enter it.
