Story in this passage

Mordecai receives public honor

During a sleepless night, the king hears the chronicle recording Mordecai’s earlier report of an assassination plot. Haman enters the court just as the king asks how a deserving man should be honored. Assuming the honor is for himself, Haman describes a royal parade, then is ordered to lead Mordecai through the city in that honor.

Setting
The royal palace during the night before Haman plans to request Mordecai’s execution.

Main events
The king remembers Mordecai’s unrewarded service, Haman proposes an elaborate honor, and he must publicly honor Mordecai.
