Story in this passage

The tribes settling east of the Jordan

Reuben and Gad ask to settle in the livestock-rich lands east of the Jordan. Moses challenges their request, they promise to fight until Israel receives its inheritance, and Moses grants the territory to Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh.

Setting
The conquered lands of Jazer and Gilead east of the Jordan before Israel crosses into Canaan.
