Boredom is boring!
Right?
It’s a feeling you don’t enjoy while being in a state or carrying out an act.
Google AI Overview says it is:
a mental state characterized by feelings of emptiness, weariness, and a lack of interest or stimulation
But beyond being a mental state, it is a Skill that has to be mastered.
Knowing how to keep at an act while not finding interest in it.
Boredom is a necessary skill you need to acquire so you can acquire skills.
For me, I started getting used to boredom early in life, and that has given me some speed.
As a teenager, I did what other teenagers considered ‘boring’.
I will study the Bible voraciously, pray, read Christian books, and learn skills like graphic design, WordPress, SEO etc.
Things that didn’t give you a dopamine rush, sometimes they even require some physical exertion, but I did them.
Till today, I don’t consider boredom a factor to stop a task – I would build calculators, sitting for hours at a stretch.
Most successful people are those who are able to do one thing for a long time, enduring boredom.
I think that at some point, boredom is no longer boredom; it becomes ‘patience’.
And patience is one of the things the Scripture says leads to fruitfulness –
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 1:5 – 8
Your success in any area of your life requires some level of boredom.
Read about many successful people, and you will discover some level of boredom in their routine that they’ve had to endure.
Your threshold of boredom tolerance has to increase both in response to yourself and to others.
You need to learn to accommodate boredom.
2 great men of God, I learn a lot from, cherished are some that many people might consider ‘boring’ to listen to – Andrew Wommack & Curry Blake (of John G. Lake Ministry)
That being said, sometimes to reduce the impact of boredom, I switch between one task and another. If I were working on a website and it’s getting too intense, I can switch to writing or reading. Of course, I do some fun activities like playing with my kids, watching some documentary stuff on YouTube, etc.
This is a gentle reminder that life is not a joke. There are situations where boredom will be the least of your problems, but to avoid being in such situations, you need to do the boring things like:
- Praying
- Studying the Bible
- Reading
They are not always exciting, even though they can be sometimes, but being disciplined with these will set you apart.
